The Greater Baton Rouge Youth Sports Association,
dba Bob Morgan Athletics
(BMA)
BMA is
a non-profit corporation dedicated to providing quality sports experiences for
the children of the Baton Rouge area. Begun in Lafayette in the 1960’s and
operating in Baton Rouge since 1985, BMA works to develop each child
socially, emotionally, and morally through a peer-group accepted physical
activity. Because children learn by doing, every child participates; we have no
“bench” or second-string. We group by ability; as a private program, we do not
use pre-set age groups or weight classes, so we can focus on the needs of
individual players. We want to be
a place where participants and families have fun.
BMA
operates year-round, using team sports to help boys and girls ages 4½ -13 ½
develop self-confidence. Instructors are hired, trained, and paid to ensure that
each child is taught and encouraged. Practices and games are structured so that
each child has measurable success each day and is recognized for his or her
individual achievement.
The goals and
structure of BMA have been reviewed and tested for almost fifty years.
The current administrative staff has worked together for more than twenty years.
Procedures and lesson plans are continually evaluated by the staff and by
experts in athletics, pediatrics, and orthopedics to make sure that instruction
is accurate and safe.
We
didn’t start our program recently, and we are not in business to make sure that
our own children have opportunities; instead, we work to provide all children
with solid instruction and controlled competition. Former participants include
Jerry Fontenot, Lyle Mouton, Major Applewhite, Donnie Jones, Max Holmes, and
Lyle Hitt.
During a calendar
year, BMA offers seasonal programs in basketball (Jan-Mar), baseball
(Apr-May), and tackle football (Sept-Oct-Nov). During the school year, practices
run on M-W-F for ages 8 and up and on T-Th. for ages 8 and under; games are
played on Saturdays. In addition, BMA runs shorter summer programs
that concentrate on individual and team skills in basketball and baseball. All
programs stress the fundamentals of the sport and team play. BMA players also
play on their school teams, and many do go on to advanced levels of competition.
At BMA,
competition is part of a learning experience. Scoring and winning come only when
players have a clear understanding of the game. Development of athletes is our
priority; self-confidence and improved skills are our measures of winning.
